This friend of mine was playing in the pro-am at the Ryder Cup when it was at Valhalla in Louisville. He was invited up by a client who happens to be a very nice physician and a member at the famous club.
If you know anything about golf, you know playing in the pro-am before a big tourney like that is an opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in golf, and those opportunities do not come cheaply. Our heroes were psyched and looking forward to finding out who their pro would be.
Typically, a pro will play a few holes with different groups or may even play the whole round. In this case, the pros were floating around and playing 4 holes and then then switching groups.
So, my friend and his client, the doctor (who we will call “Doc”) and the remainder of their foursome got hooked up with none other than World Golf Hall of Famer, 2 time Master’s Champion, U.S. Open Winner, and 5 time British Open Champion, TOM WATSON. Mr. Watson is known to be a kind man with a sly toothy grin and and the physique of a linebacker. In short, Mr. Watson has game. Still. Lots of it.
Mr. Watson is also quite a gentleman. He was by all accounts chatting it up with the guys and was well engaged in the conversation. (I once played in a pro-am and our pro wouldn’t even talk. He was kind of a weirdo and Bo and Brad were out driving him, so he was pouting too.)
Back to the story…So, they get past the pleasantries and our foursome, led by “Doc”, asks Mr. Watson to take the tee honors. They wanted to watch him hammer the ball as he is known to do.
Mr. Watson surveys the hole. (By professional bad-ass standards a short, drive-able par 4)
He tees his ball up.
He turns to the four.
Mr. Watson politely asks, “Can I drive this hole?”
Doc walks over.
Scans the fairway.
And asks without fear…….. “SO, CAN YOU HIT A DRAW?”
